Walk on Mighty Vatnajokull, Europe’s Largest Glacier Ice Cap

Iceland is home of one of the most magnificent and fascinating blue ice caves that are over 2500 years in age. It’s an opportunity of a life time to enjoy one of the world’s greatest wildernesses, Iceland’s largest glacier in the middle of nowhere. The trip to the ice caves starts from Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon where you hop onto a Super Jeep and begin your journey climbing on the mighty icefield of Vatnajokull. We booked ours with talented team of Glacier Journey this past February.

We arrived at the meeting point of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and were greeted by super enthusiastic Andrei and Laufey of Glacier Journey. We were provided with safety equipment (helmet and crampons). Andrei measured our feet for the crampons and ensured our footwear had adequate ankle protection. We boarded the super truck and the fun began for us. Andrei was naturally talented and very friendly. He kept us engaged with his energy and passion throughout the journey. While driving in the snowfields of the glacier, we learnt Andrei is a certificated guide with 10+ years of experience in mountain and glacier journeys. He is a native of Romania, surrounded by a second-longest mountain range in Europe and now lives in Iceland with his family. Adventure is in his DNA and he is a true nature lover. Andrei is trained and certified Wilderness First Responder and Crevasse Rescuer.

Before approaching the ice cave, Andrei prepped us well about the walk on the glacier and ice cave conditions. We were comfortable and felt very safe in his hands. The ice cave was out of this world, it was such an amazing experience! The view inside the Ice cave was spectacular, a beautiful combination of the colors and amazing shades of black and blue. Walking on the glacier was quite an experience. Andrei demonstrated to us how to put on the crampons and how to walk appropriately on the glacier. Andrei was very mindful and made sure each and every one of us in our party was safe. He was patient and allowed us to go at our pace and he was always there to give us a hand if it was needed. Andrei made sure that everyone in our group had plenty of opportunity to take pictures. He in fact carried a portable flash light with him to facilitate pictures inside the cave and dark spots and I felt that was so thoughtful of him. Loved the gesture!!

All in all, we had an amazing time, with a brilliant guide and company. I can’t wait to go back to Iceland and embark on another adventure in fascinating Vatanjokull with Andrei and Glacier Journey. If you’re going to Iceland, contact Glacier Journey (www.glacierjourney.is), the team that knows Iceland as back of their hand and book your Ice Cap Glacier adventure to a higher level.

Takk team Glacier Journey for showing us the best of Iceland! What an adventure it was! 🇮🇸 ❄️
