UK Emerging as Stomping Grounds of Modern Bulgarian Winemakers

Today was a good day for Bulgarian Winemakers and Vintners. A handful of new generation premier winemakers were invited to showcase their wines in the event “Modern Wines of Bulgaria Trade & Press Tasting” held at The Embassy of Republic of Bulgaria in London, UK. The focus of this event was to present the wines of modern Bulgaria specifically crafted by indigenous grape varietals (Mavrud, Gamza, Ruben, Ruen, Dimyat, Misket & famous Melnik Family – Broadleaved, 55 & 1300).

Since the fall of Soviet era and with the end of communism, winemaking industry that operated for decades behind the iron curtain is no longer controlled by the state. Bulgaria is making a comeback and new generation winemakers are gradually finding its identity. Bulgarian wines are competing with international wines and young wineries are rapidly covering lost grounds to put the country back on the map.

Our friends from Villa Melnik Family Winery, one of the proud Winemakers & Vintners of Melnik were present at the event today. Table #7 was swarming with wine enthusiasts and lovers to taste deliciously seductive and appealing wines from Melnik, once were Winston Churchill’s delight. After all, Churchill was very stately when it came to the etiquette and his preference with wines.

The event was organized by The Old Cellar & GLOBUL WINES and was a big success. A masterclass was also held by Caroline Gilby, the author of the book “The Wines of Bulgaria, Romania & Moldova“. Caroline presented the excerpts on some of her favorite wines from the regions and also distributed signed copies of her new publication at the event.

All in all a productive day in the British capital, excellent showcasing of upcoming wines and camaraderie of Bulgarian winemakers & vintners. Bulgaria has potential and Bulgaria offers more. Nazdrave! (Cheers In Bulgarian) 🍁🍇🍷🥂🇧🇬
